What Spaceman is

Spaceman is a crash game made by Pragmatic Play and released in March 2022. A cartoon astronaut lifts off, a multiplier starts at 1.00x and climbs, and at some point the astronaut flies away. If you cashed out before that moment, your bet is paid at the multiplier you locked in. If you did not, the bet is lost. That is the whole game.

It is not a slot. There are no reels, paylines or symbols to line up. The only decision a player makes is when to take the money, and that decision does not change the odds in the long run.

This site is an independent statistics and education project. It does not accept bets, sell predictions or recommend casinos, and it is not affiliated with Pragmatic Play.

Stake limits are set by each casino, so this article does not quote them. The same goes for the RTP: the figure shown in the rules screen of the casino you actually use is the one that applies to you. If you want to see how the percentage is built, read our Spaceman RTP explainer.

How a round works

1. Betting phase

Before a round starts there is a short window in which bets are accepted. As far as we could establish, a player can place one or two bets in the same round, and each bet is settled on its own. Layouts differ between operators, so check the interface you are using.

2. The flight

When the window closes, the astronaut takes off and the multiplier rises from 1.00x. Every player in the round sees the same flight. The moment it ends was decided by the random number generator, not by anything the players do.

3. Cash-out or crash

You can press the cash-out button at any time before the flight ends. Your payout is the bet multiplied by the multiplier at that instant. You can also set an automatic cash-out at a chosen multiplier, which fires without you pressing anything.

Spaceman also offers a partial cash-out: you take back a part of the bet while the rest stays in play. Sources we found describe this as a 50% option, but they do not agree on the details, so read the in-game rules for the exact behaviour at your casino.

A worked example

Say you stake 10 units and cash out at 3.12x. Payout: 10 x 3.12 = 31.20 units, a profit of 21.20. If the flight ends at 2.90x before you press the button, the 10 units are lost. The result of the next round has no link to this one.

What the numbers mean in practice

RTP and house edge

An RTP of 96.5% means that, across a very large number of rounds, the game returns 96.5% of all money staked to players as a group and keeps 3.5%. It says nothing about a single session. Over 1,000 rounds of 1 unit you would expect, on average, to lose 35 units, but the real result can be far above or far below that.

Why the cash-out target does not change the long-run cost

In a simple model of a crash game with a 96.5% RTP, the chance that a round reaches at least multiplier m is 0.965 / m (for m of 1 or more). Spaceman does not publish its full distribution, so treat the table as an illustration of the idea and not as the official figures.

Cash-out targetChance of reaching itPayout if reachedAverage return per 1 unit
1.5xabout 64.3%1.50.965
2xabout 48.3%20.965
3xabout 32.2%30.965
5xabout 19.3%50.965
10xabout 9.65%100.965
100xabout 0.97%1000.965
5,000xabout 0.019%5,0000.965

The last column is the same on every row: a low target wins often and pays little, a high target wins rarely and pays a lot, and the average is identical. That is why no cash-out habit beats the house edge. What you choose is how bumpy the ride is, not what it costs on average. Our probability and math guide goes through the derivation step by step.

Is the game fair?

The honest answer has two parts.

  • Spaceman is not provably fair. There are no seeds, hashes or verification tools that let a player check a round afterwards. Anyone who tells you to "verify your Spaceman round" is wrong or selling something.
  • Fairness rests on RNG certification by independent test laboratories and on the licence of the casino that offers the game. That is a different kind of assurance: you trust an auditor instead of checking maths yourself.

Provably fair crash games, such as Aviator by Spribe, work differently. For a plain comparison of the two models see Spaceman and provable fairness.

Common misunderstandings

Past rounds predict the next one

They do not. Every round is independent. If five low crashes in a row have happened, the next round has exactly the same chances as any other. Believing otherwise is the gambler's fallacy.

Predictors, signals and bots work

They do not. The result is generated by the RNG at the casino's server and cannot be known beforehand. Tools that promise otherwise are scams or simply do not work. Never pay for one and never hand over account details to a "signal" service.

A strategy can remove the house edge

It cannot. Staking plans can change how large and how frequent your swings are, but not the 3.5% average cost per unit staked.

It is "like a slot"

Casinos often file it near slots, but it plays differently. In a slot, the outcome is dealt once you spin. Here you choose the moment of exit, which makes it feel like a skill game even though the average return is fixed.

Who it suits and who it does not

It may suit

  • Adults who want to understand how crash games work before deciding anything.
  • People who treat a game as paid entertainment, set a limit in advance and accept that the money may be gone.
  • Readers who like probability and want to see how a multiplier, a target and an RTP fit together. The free demo is a safe place to see the rounds without staking anything.

It does not suit

  • Anyone under 18, or under the legal gambling age where they live.
  • Anyone who hopes to make an income or recover earlier losses. The game has a negative expected return.
  • Anyone who finds it hard to stop, who plays to escape stress, or who borrows to play.
  • People in places where online gambling is not permitted. Rules differ between countries and change over time, so check your local law.

Where to go next

If you want the mechanics in more detail, start with the guide on how to play Spaceman. Keep in mind throughout that the game is built so that the operator keeps a margin, and that a good week or a bad week says very little about the underlying odds.
